Maybe it was a tap in a parking lot, a slide into a snowbank, or a misjudged turn backing out of the garage. Now you're looking at a cracked, scuffed, or sagging bumper and wondering what comes next. Do you need bumper repair, or is it time for bumper replacement? And what about the sensors you've heard live back there?
Take a breath. We've been through it so many times, and we know how to handle it. At Bob Carter's Auto Body, a family-owned shop in Downers Grove since 1975, our job is to be helpful, explain things well, and stay on your side from the first look to the day you drive away.
Why Your Bumper Deserves More Than a Photo
From the outside, a bumper cover can look like it only needs a little attention. Behind it, there may be more going on. Broken mounting tabs, cracked brackets, and damaged parts tucked behind the cover often don't show up in a picture. That's why we don't make a final call or promise a final price based on photos alone. Sometimes we only see the whole story once the bumper cover comes off.
The hidden parts matter more than most folks realize. Our owner, Mike Carter, hears this all the time. A lot of people think their blind spot monitors are in their side mirrors because that's where the warning light shows up. On many vehicles, those monitors are actually mounted behind the rear bumper on the sides. Parking sensors are a different thing. They don't work the way blind spot monitors do, even though people often mix the two up.
So when your bumper takes a hit, the parts behind it may need attention too. Whether sensors or cameras need calibration after a bumper replacement depends on the vehicle manufacturer and its guidelines. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't. We follow what your manufacturer says, and we'll explain it in plain language.
Bumper Repair or Bumper Replacement? An Honest Answer
A lot of people worry they'll get talked into the biggest job. That won't happen here. We put what's best for you first, and sometimes that means bumper repair instead of replacement.
Can a bumper with broken tabs or clips be fixed? In some cases, yes. We decide that on the spot. We have the capability, but it's often trickier than you'd think. If the flange where the bumper attaches to the bracket is completely cut off, there isn't much material left to work with. Not every bumper can be repaired, and not every bumper needs to be replaced. We'll look at it with you and tell you straight what makes sense.
If you're paying out of pocket, you may want to know whether a repair is possible. If you're filing an insurance claim, replacement may be the better fit. Either way, we'll walk you through your options.
When replacement is the right call, parts matter. We use OEM parts as much as possible. As Mike puts it, an OEM part and an aftermarket part sitting side by side can be hard to tell apart. The difference often shows up when you mount it. Some aftermarket parts fit great, and others leave gaps. That's why we check the replacement part against your vehicle before painting it, so fit problems get caught early.
From there, our painters use PPG and BASF paint lines in a downdraft spray booth. They match your new bumper as closely as practical to your vehicle's existing finish.

An honest quote: Every job is different, so there's no fixed price. Your quote depends on any concealed damage, whether repair is an option, the replacement part, paintwork, and any calibration your manufacturer requires.
